MESSENGER DOUGLAS
In 1985, Roland Douglas began recording for Errol "Spears" Ruddock's label, Silicon Squad, releasing the debut 12", Mirror Lover, shortly after, under the name 'Roland Xerox'.
He continued to develop his unique singing style in the nineties, gaining respect in Birmingham's reggae scene with various dub plate recordings for established sound systems around town.
Wanting to gain a better understanding of music and production, during this period, Roland found himself experimenting with chords and teaching himself the basics of guitar and keyboard.
It was during a meeting in Jamaica in '97 that, (on the suggestion of roots singer Luciano) 'Roland Xerox' became 'Messenger Douglas'.
A new name beckoned a new era, as Messenger Douglas continued working with producer Spears Ruddock, releasing a flow of 7" singles including 'Opportunity', 'Sleeping Man', 'Pressure' and the following year under Humal label he recorded, Give me, Poor man, Try, and 'Crosswinds'.
In 2002 Messenger began recording for the highly acclaimed Groove Corporation production team (Brian Nordhoff, Rob Cimarosti). Shortly after which he was invited by them to become a member of the Overproof Soundsystem, performing alongside Ras T.Weed, Michael 'Juggla' Madden, Mark 'Magoo' Robertson and Rob 'Stallion' Cimarosti, and later writing and recording regularly at G-Corp studio,(The Elephant House). He has continued to be a member of Overproof Soundsystem, now joined by legendary drummer Conrad Kelly (Steel Pulse/Quantic/UB40).
An introduction through Brian Nordoff lead to work with Earl Faulkner and Jimmy Brown(UB40) on their 'Dub Specimen' album in 2004, which featured 2 Messenger Douglas tracks.
2005 brought the release of 'Cant Let it Go/Between me and You' (10") on the Birmingham based CMI label.
With the guidance of Wendell Shotta Herbert (Alphamix CEO) 'Share' in 2006,became the the first release on the Alphamix Label, and immediately caught the attention of the UK reggae ears.
Messenger has since been busy writing and recording for the upcoming 'Overproof' album, 'Jump up'. . . . while popping up several times on the "Gcorp meets the Mighty Tree" project, voicing a cover of 'Perilous Times' (10") the first single of the album.
Since recording the five track/five dubs EP entitled 'Earth Cries' for internet release in May. Messenger Douglas,in Partnership with Rad Kelly has been working frenetically. . . Carving out the songs for his debut solo album (Circumstances),to be released on the Alphamix label next autumn.
